What to Plant, When

South Africa has distinct planting seasons by province. Use this guide to know exactly what to plant and when in your region.

☀️ Summer
🍂 Autumn
❄️ Winter
🌸 Spring

☀️ Summer Planting (Oct – Feb)

South Africa's summer rainfall regions (including Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and North West) are in peak planting season. This is the time to plant maize, soybeans, sorghum, sweet potatoes, and most warm-weather vegetables.

  • 🌽 Maize, plant Oct to Dec in most highveld areas
  • 🫘 Soybeans, plant Nov to Dec, 300 000 plants/ha
  • 🍠 Sweet potato, plant Nov slips after last frost
  • 🍅 Tomatoes, transplant Oct to Jan, full sun
  • 🧅 Onions, transplant seedlings Nov in Limpopo
  • 🌿 Spinach, direct sow Sep to Mar, fast growing
  • 🥜 Groundnuts, plant Nov–Dec in sandy soils

🍂 Autumn Planting (Mar – May)

As summer heat eases, it's the ideal time to plant cool-season crops and prepare soils. Western Cape's winter-rainfall region begins its most productive period in autumn. Focus shifts to brassicas, root vegetables, and winter grains.

  • 🥬 Cabbage, plant Mar–May, ideal for cool nights
  • 🌿 Spinach, excellent autumn crop, cold tolerant
  • 🥕 Carrots, direct sow Apr–May in prepared beds
  • 🧅 Onions, plant seeds May for winter bulbing
  • 🌾 Wheat, plant May–Jun in Western Cape
  • 🧄 Garlic, plant Apr–May cloves, 5cm deep
  • 🥦 Broccoli, transplant Apr–May, cool conditions

❄️ Winter Farming (Jun – Aug)

Winter in South Africa's summer-rainfall regions is dry and cool, ideal for certain vegetables, winter grains, and livestock management. The Western Cape is in full swing with wheat and wine grape production. Focus on frost-hardy crops and soil preparation for spring planting.

  • 🌾 Wheat, grows through winter in Western Cape
  • 🥗 Lettuce, excellent winter crop, light frost tolerant
  • 🌿 Spinach, grows year-round with light frost protection
  • 🫛 Peas, plant Jun–Jul in frost-free areas
  • 🥦 Broccoli & cauliflower, harvest Jun–Aug
  • 🐐 Goat & sheep breeding season, monitor condition
  • 🌍 Soil prep & composting for spring planting

🌸 Spring Planting (Sep – Oct)

Spring is the most useful farming season in South Africa, the last frosts are passing, soil is warming, and the rains are beginning in summer-rainfall areas. This is the time to prepare seedbeds, plant early maize, and start vegetable transplants. Energy and planning in spring determines your whole season.

  • 🌽 Maize, early planting Sep–Oct in warmer areas
  • 🍅 Tomatoes, start seedlings indoors Aug, transplant Sep
  • 🫑 Peppers & chillies, transplant after last frost
  • 🥒 Cucumbers & baby marrow, plant Sep–Oct
  • 🌱 Prepare seedbeds & add organic compost
  • 🐣 Chicken hatching season, chick orders peak
  • 💧 Service irrigation systems before summer

🌾 Essential Farming Tips for South Africa

🧪
Test Your Soil First
Always test your soil's pH and nutrient levels before adding fertilizer. Most SA soils are slightly acidic, lime may be needed before planting maize or wheat.
💧
Drip Irrigation Saves Water
Drip irrigation uses up to 50% less water than flood or sprinkler systems. Critical for dry provinces like Northern Cape and Limpopo where water is expensive.
🌿
Compost is Liquid Gold
Good compost builds soil structure, feeds beneficial microbes, and reduces your reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers. Every SA farmer should have a compost heap.
🐛
Identify Pests Early
Fall armyworm, aphids, and stalk borer are the biggest threats to SA maize. Scout fields weekly and act at first sign, waiting costs yield and money.
🌡️
Watch the Frost Dates
SA's Highveld and escarpment areas get hard frosts from May–August. Know your last spring frost date before planting warm-season crops like tomatoes and maize.
🧬
Choose the Right Variety
Not all seed varieties perform equally across SA. Hybrid maize varieties like PAN 6616 and DKC 73-70 are bred for different rainfall zones, choose correctly for your region.
